First copy of the book 'Best of Show' for FIVA President Tiddo Bresters

A new perspective on capturing mobile heritage

On Saturday 14 September, during the Concours d'Elgance at the Mariënveld estate, the book “Best of Show” was presented to FIVA President Tiddo Bresters.
The book “Best of Show” with the subtitle “A fascinating story behind Lucy's 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K” was written by Mercedes-Benz historian Robert Scheerboom. After a short introduction about the origins of the first vehicles with a compressor engine, the story follows about Lucy Franchi and her brother Pierre from Paris. They were successful with their café-chantant, where many new artists performed, such as Edith Piaf and Django Reinhardt, who would later become world famous. The interesting events during and after the Second World War are also excellently documented.
In 2014, the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A was auctioned in Stuttgart on behalf of Monaco Auto, who had purchased the car from the estate of Pierre Franchi. The current owner Hans Hulsberger from Switzerland bid on the car and became the second owner.
UNESCO and FIVA

The book is the result of a new perspective on recording mobile heritage, where original historical documents, photographs and in-depth and/or forensic research demonstrate the 'authenticity' and 'provenance' of a vehicle. Something that has become necessary in recent years due to the trade in counterfeiting and fraud. In fact, this new perspective on research has been a tried and tested phenomenon in the art world for quite some time.

Gert-Jan van der Meij's body shop brought the convertible to 100+. At the author's request, Mercedes-Benz Classic in Fellbach, now Mercedes-Benz Heritage GmbH, conducted a forensic investigation into authenticity and provenance. Their 'assessment' is now inextricably linked to this car and its history.
With the main point of the FIVA statutes to ensure the future preservation of authentic vehicles, this federation seamlessly ties in with the UNESCO objective with the world heritage. This book gives a solid description of that.

Robert Scheerboom worked for the Dutch importer of Mercedes-Benz from the early seventies and was Liaison Manager of Maybach and Mercedes-Benz McLaren for six years from 2000. In 2006 he continued as an independent entrepreneur as importer of the Benelux for the BINZ brand, the partner of Mercedes-Benz for hearses and extended E-Class limousines.
Scheerboom is known for his books, articles and columns. More than fifty years ago he started his newsletter 'Vernomen', which was later converted into 'Ster Aktueel', a trade journal for the Dutch sales organisation. As a Mercedes-Benz ambassador he is known for his publications, but also as a 'questionnaire' about the history of 'Das Haus'.
